Event Information

You'll get to enjoy a hands-on experience with Earlham professors! Most sessions are 50 minutes long, except for two extended sessions that are 110 minutes (so if you choose one of those, it will take the place of two standard sessions).

Please review the session descriptions carefully and select your top three choices when registering.
Note: Session assignments are based on capacity and your rankings. If all three of your selected sessions are full, we will contact you to choose a fourth option.

Hands-on experiences (From 10:00 AM to 10:50 AM AND from 11:00 to 11:50 AM) (Students only)

Biology
- Title : Exploring the Microscopic World
- Description: Students will explore how bacteria make yogurt and glow in the dark, how algae swim toward light, how parasites can make us sick, and more!
Chemistry
- Title : Solving Crimes with Science!
- Description: Fingerprints, blood identification, lead gunshot residue, ink chromatography.
Computer Science
- Title : Mapping your world
- Description: Students will learn how drones and software can be used to map their world.
Engineering
- Title : Rapid Prototyping
- Description: Students will have a small selection of parts that they will use to design a floating toy that must land in the box.
Mathematics
- Title : Shape Shifters: Folding Space with Squares
- Description: Students will use crafts and games to explore strange and unintuitive surfaces.
Neuroscience
- Title : Create a Neuron
- Description: Students will use materials from around campus to create a neuron.
Physics & Astronomy
- Title : Where did Pluto go?
- Description: Students will use real data from professional telescopes to find our favorite dwarf planet and deduce the structure of our solar system.
Pre-Health
- Title : Pre-Health and Pre-Med at EC: Why are we distinctive!
- Description: Explore the Center for Global Health Programs with Pre-Health/Pre-Med Advisors and visit the cadaver lab.
Quantitative Reasoning
- Title : Train your own AI
- Description: Students will explore how computers learn by teaching a pile of matchboxes to play a simplified form of chess.

Hands-on experiences (From 10:00 AM to 11:50 AM ) (Students only)

Biology (Ecology)
- Title : EcoTour and Ecological Restoration
- Description: Join us for an interactive walk through campus prairies, pollinator gardens, and restoration sites. We will explore restoration ecology, the roles of native and invasive species, and how biodiversity is being supported on campus and at Miller Farm, a student-run farm! Drawing on both ecological science and Indigenous Knowledge systems and reciprocity, participants will learn how caring for the land is also a way of giving back. The tour includes hands-on activities like seed collecting and “guerrilla gardening” to experience restoration in action.
Earth & Environmental Science
- Title : How healthy is your river?
- Description: We'll explore how environmental scientists determine river health by testing Clear Creek on Earlham's back campus. Plus check out any fossils we find along the way! Students participating should be ready to walk on unpaved trails and enjoy being outside.
